Using a theorem on continuous Markov chains about the equivalence between partial balance and insensitivity, the author shows that the product-form state distribution of flexible manufacturing systems, with zero-buffer stations and reversible parts routing, is insensitive to the forms of the service time distributions. This generalizes a recent result of \textit{D. D. Yao} and \textit{J. A. Buzacott} [Oper. Res. 35, 87-93 (1987; Zbl 0633.90025)].
