In recent years it has become apparent that the transonic potential equation does not give a unique solution when shock waves are present in the flow. A previous paper has examined the causes of the phenomenon [the author, ibid. 68, 43-56 (1987; Zbl 0613.76070)]. The present paper is concerned with the extension of the previous analysis to include a simplified form of the Euler equations. Multiple solutions for the Euler equations can occur when the average of the velocity on the upper and lower surface of the airfoil exceeds sonic values.
