The concept of separation, as a specifical notion in the setting of fuzzy sets, was first introduced in the case of a finite referential. Main results are summarized here; this concept is then generalized to the case of any referential, finite or not, by means of fuzzy integrals. This study, although still leaving open questions, is aimed to show the interest of this separation notion and derived ones, which particularly leads to measures of fuzziness, not related to some previously defined negation, and, moreover, open the way to define non-pointwise negation.
