Some variants of the Littlewood-Paley theory are derived, using the real interpolation method; as an application, new examples of Fourier-\(L^ p\)-multipliers are constructed. Complementary results to the Marcinkiewicz and Hörmander multiplier theorems are proved, and a compactly supported continuous Fourier multiplier on the line which cannot be approximated in the multiplier norm by Schwartz functions is constructed.
