It is shown that smooth extendability of norms from a subspace Y of X is in some cases powerful enough to provide for an averaging procedure to produce a bounded linear projection of X onto Y. In these terms, a smoothness characterization of C(K) spaces which are isomorphic to \(c_ 0\) is given.
