The conditions and the conclusions of the Toupin-Berdichevskij theorem are examined [\textit{R. A. Toupin}, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 18, No.2, 83- 96 (1965; Zbl 0203.268); \textit{V. L. Berdichevskij}, Prikl. Mat. Mekh. 38, 851-864 (1974; Zbl 0349.73009)], whereby it is explained and demonstrated by an example that the theorem cannot be considered as a mathematical expression of Saint-Venant's principle in elasticity.
