This paper investigates the use of shape-preserving splines for the numerical solution of the Korteweg-de Vries equation modified to include such effects as dissipation or time varying dispersion. Using a fractional time-step method, a simple algorithm is obtained, which is shown to be very accurate, even though the soliton becomes very steep.
