A database consistency concept is proposed in which the database state is regarded as a result of entry of a sequence of documents. Correlation of this concept with other traditional representations (normal forms, integrity constraints, universal and representative relations) is discussed. Problems of database updating are discussed within the framework of the proposed approach. The documental approach allows the updating technology to be similar to that of data entry. This makes it possible to supplement the standard database management system (DBMS) data entry programs with an updating program thus making database updating more simple and efficient.
