The purpose of this paper is to study some of the implications for stability of equilibria in nonlinear elastostatics of assuming that the stored energy function is rank one convex. The main result is that the uniqueness result of \textit{R. J. Knops} and \textit{C. A. Stuart} [e.g. Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 86, 233-249 (1984; Zbl 0589.73017)] may be derived by the authors' methods.
