The development of variational methods to compute ideal MHD stability of axisymmetric plasmas is reviewed. Attention is focussed on degeneracy in the MHD ideal stability problem. Difference schemes for spectral elliptic degenerate problems are investigated. New simple and effective numerical methos for MHD stability calculations are proposed.
