A negative link is an oriented link that can be represented by a diagram with all the crossings negative. The author proves that the signature of a nontrivial negative link is positive. The proof uses a combinatorial formula for the signature of alternating links and the fact that if one crossing in a diagram of an oriented link is smoothed, then the signature changes at most by one.
