This note concerns the second author's paper [ibid. 70, 138-144 (1987; Zbl 0617.65029)]. It is proposed that complex shifts be used in a shifted and inverted simultaneous iteration for a Hermitian eigenproblem. This avoids placing the shift on a point where factorization breaks down and complex arithmetic is only needed in a few parts of the algorithm.
