Using ultraproducts short new proofs are given for the following two theorems of Vámos: If a matroid M is representable over fields of arbitrarily large characteristic then so is it over a field of characteristic zero; and if every finite subset of M is representable over an extension field of a field F then so is M itself over an extension field of F.
