We discuss the jump conditions which must hold across discontinuities in the solutions of the equations governing the motion of upper and lower convected Maxwell liquids. In two space dimensions, we can also give such jump relations for Johnson-Segalman fluids [\textit{M. W. Johnson} and \textit{D. Segalman}, ibid. 2, 255-270 (1977; Zbl 0369.76008)].
