Physical mathematical models and numerical procedures, which can be adopted when limited computational regions are used to simulate the transients of compressible external flows, are analyzed in this paper. In particular different formulations of the external boundary conditions are considered. The numerical results show that these formulations may give a poor description of the real flow evolution. A new technique to impose these boundary conditions is therefore proposed and its ability to give an accurate description of the time evolution of short transient flows is demonstrated.
