The author shows that a class of binary operators, defined on the family of all fuzzy subsets of an ordinary set, which are pointwise (in the sense of Definition 2.2), commutative, associative, compatible and averaging (in the sense of Definition 2.1) coincides with a suitable class of operators, called mode-type operators, defined using certain functions having suitable properties.
