The author considers the extremality criteria for the minimization problem of dilatation on homotopy classes of homeomorphisms with prescribed boundary values. The previous results are spread onto a wider class of functionals. The other question under consideration is concerned with the existence problem of the Dirichlet integral in homotopy classes of mappings. A new effect of ``spontaneous changing of resolution character'' is found for the equation of harmonic mappings of closed Riemann surfaces.
