This is the first of two papers [for Part II cf. ibid. 125-148 (1986; Zbl 0667.58015)] on the Hamiltonian structure of Yang-Mills theories. In this paper we review the differential geometrical formulation of constrained Hamiltonian systems as developed by Gotay, Nester and Hinds.
