The problem of optimal design of linear elastic beams and frames with unspecified location, stiffness and prestress of joints is considered. It is assumed that the structure is subjected to loads and initial distortions. Using the adjoint problems and their respective fields, sensitivity operators and optimality conditions are derived for an arbitrary integral objective functional expressed in terms of displacements, stresses or strains. Illustrative examples are presented.
