Saturated-unsaturated flow is investigated in an unconfined aquifer containing a distribution of fractures such that on some macroscopic scale there can be defined a smooth averaged hydraulic conductivity. After constructing the conditions which relate the hydraulic properties between the unsaturated and saturated zones, it is shown that the flow in the unsaturated zone is essentially vertical. Below the water table the macropores are conduits for groundwater and the flow has a large horizontal component. Some important implications on previous models is discussed.
