A full discussion of the geodesic equations for the NUT metric leads to the interpretation of the metric as representing the field round a gravitating mass which has in addition a gravitational field of ``magnetic monopole'' type; that is, a field which in the Newtonian approximation acts by way of vector product with the velocity. The authors note that this elegant result is not perfect, because the time coordinate depends on the direction of the line singularity.
