A linear inverse heat conduction problem of calculation of boundary heat flux from measured transient temperatures at an interior point, is considered. A new automatic procedure to recover approximately the \(L_ 2\) norm of the data error, when this information is not available, is presented. A test case of a semi-infinite body exposed to a heat flux that is initially zero and has a step increase and then drops to zero, is analyzed and several numerical results are presented.
