The authors formulate the behaviour of a set of discs accessing a common channel as an M/G/1 queue with delayed busy periods and semi-Markov services. The analysis is thorough and can be extended to cover other proposed structures. The paper finishes with a numerical comparison of two disc systems and checks the answers with simulation results.
