This study is concerned with the development of a method of solving the relaxation equations for smooth distributions applicable to arbitrary collision models in the presence of variable macroparameters and sources. The effect of the initial data, temperature gradients and external sources on the relaxation is investigated. A nonlinear system of equations for the number of quanta is obtained for a mixture of harmonic molecules under highly nonequilibrium conditions. The formulation of certain problems with allowance for relaxation effects is discussed.
