\textit{R. T. Smith} [Am. J. Math. 97, 364-385 (1975; Zbl 0321.57020)] studied the problem of existence of harmonic maps between Euclidean spheres. The harmonic maps he constructed are of a very special type. The author in this paper completely solves the problem of existence of harmonic maps of Smith's type. Some similar results in this problem had been obtained by \textit{V. Pettinati} and \textit{A. Ratto} [Existence and nonexistence results for harmonic maps between spheres (to appear)], using completely different methods.
