The author considers the problem of solidification of a binary alloy. He develops an approximate method based on heat balance considerations and compares it with available analytical solutions and numerical methods based on enthalpy. The method is such that it is applicable for problems such as mushy regions with superheat, and its efficiency is much greater than previous used methods.
