A new kind of spline, so called alternate spline of order k for given knot sequence \(\tau\), is defined recursively and its properties are studied. A theorem discusses the effect of multiple knots in the knot sequence. It is proved that the B-splines are actually a special case of alternate splines if the knots \(\tau\) are chosen properly.
