In this paper, the authors investigate the necessary and sufficient conditions for the wave and shock velocities in nonlinear electromagnetic media to be bounded from above by the velocity of light. The medium is taken isotropic and the electric and magnetic permeabilities are assumed field dependent. The obtained conditions are in the form of simple inequalities involving the permeabilities, their derivatives and the values of the field.
