We consider the combined flexural-flexural-torsional motions of an inextensible, elastic beam subjected to an arbitrary, three dimensional base translation (or applied base force) and a uniaxial rotation (or torque) about a transverse axis. The purpose is to present the equations of motion of the beam in such a way that the influence of the support motion appears directly. The model will be especially useful in the analysis of experiments of simple structural systems which are excited by the support motion and in which the objective is to develop an understanding of large amplitude phenomena such as nonlinear resonances and chaos.
