It is shown that the number E(N) of numbers not exceeding N and not being the sum of four positive integer cubes, satisfies \(E(N)\quad \ll \quad N^{131/147+\epsilon}.\) This improves a result of \textit{R. C. Vaughan} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 365, 122-170 (1986; Zbl 0574.10046)] who obtained the exponent 103/115 in place of 131/147.
