The author determines the number of solutions of the matrix equation \(X^2= A\) for non-scalar \(2\times 2\) matrices over finite fields \(\mathbb{F}_q\) of odd characteristic. Moreover, he considers the matrix diagonal equations \(a_1 X_1^2+\cdots+ a_m X_m^2=0\) with \(a_1,\dots, a_m\in \mathbb{F}_q\).
