Practical applications of the residual scaling techniques (coarse-grid correction optimization techniques) in multigrid methods are presented. A heuristic residual analysis is introduced to estimate the residual scaling factor for a high-order multigrid method. It is shown that pre-optimization is preferable in both convergence and efficiency. Numerical results support the theoretical conclusions made in part I [ibid. 86, No. 2-3, 283-303 (1997; reviewed above)].
