The aim of this very short article is to provide some highlights on the strategy developed in order to obtain what is now known as Merel's theorem on the uniform boundedness conjecture [Invent. Math. 124, 437-449 (1996; Zbl 0936.11037)]. It further gives the names of people who worked towards the proof of this conjecture, or who provided -- after Merel -- some more precise versions, like J. Oesterlé and P. Parent.
