Summary: We present an overview of the theory of ``Operator Spaces'' (sometimes called ``non-commutative Banach spaces''), recently developed by Effros, Ruan, Blecher, Paulsen and others. We describe several applications of this new ideology to operator algebras and to various similarity problems.
