In the paper the nature is explained of constraints introduced on matrices when studying conformal field theories in two dimensions, constraints that are associated with certain transformations on graphs. It is shown that MacLane's rectangle, pentagon and hexagon identities developed in category theory when applied in particle physics to duality diagrams yield the necessary physical algebraic constraints.
