The Kern of a group was introduced by \textit{R. Baer} [in Compos Math. 1, 254-283 (1934; Zbl 0009.15504)] as the intersection of the normalisers of the cyclic subgroups of the group. Marginal subgroups were introduced by \textit{P. Hall} [in J. Reine Angew. Math. 182, 156-157 (1940; Zbl 0023.29902)]. The authors extend these notions to rings and investigate some of the basic properties.
