The authors consider diffusion approximations to Markov models of multi- species ecological systems, with particular emphasis on the stability of some three species systems. The effectiveness of the approximations is illustrated by simulation. Closely related work can be found in the papers of the reviewer [J. Appl. Probab 9, 519-541 (1972; Zbl 0241.60070)]\ and \textit{T. G. Kurtz} [Stochastic Processes Appl. 6, 223-240 (1978; Zbl 0373.60085)].
