This article treat upon an optimization problem concerning the module placement for an array carrier; the method uses an analogy between the minimum strain energy and the minimization of the objective function of the associated quadratic assignment problem. The search direction method is based on the gradient information using a simple three-point interpolation (for the unidimensional case). Some examples are used to test and evaluate the described method.
