The author considers a convolution operator of the first kind on a finite interval acting between Sobolev spaces. He shows that conditions proven to be sufficient by \textit{M. A. Bastos} and \textit{A. F. Dos Santos} [ibid. 13, No. 5, 638-659 (1990; Zbl 0715.47016)] for the operator to be Fredholm are actually necessary.
