The authors uses the Eells-Wood construction to derive harmonic maps from holomorphic ones via associated curves in the case of maps of a Riemann surface \(M\) into periodic flag manifolds. With respect to a class of invariant metrics on the range, various stability properties of the examples obtained are shown. For \(M\) the 2-torus, new examples of circle- equivariant harmonic nonholomorphic maps are given. Finally, a connection of these results with harmonic maps into loop groups is discussed.
