Let \(R\) be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with infinite residue field. The paper investigates the structure of canonical modules over \(R\) and their associated graded modules. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the associated graded module \(G(K)\) of a canonical \(R\)-module \(K\) to be a canonical \(G(R)\)-module. The case when \(R\) is one dimensional is studied in detail.
