Maximal arcs and related designs (Q1175957)

The author uses maximal arcs (in the sense of \textit{E. J. Morgan} [Ars Comb. 4, 3--16 (1977; Zbl 0394.05004)]) to construct series of block designs from the arcs of symmetric designs found by \textit{W. D. Wallis} [Bull. Aust. Math. Soc. 4, 41--49 (1971; Zbl 0203.30802)] and \textit{C. J. Mitchell} [Discrete Math. 26, 247--250 (1979; Zbl 0416.05016)]. Many of these designs appear to be new. An indication of that is a design with the long standing open parameters \(2\)-\((36,8,4)\) constructed from a symmetric design related to the projective plane of order 4.
