The bifurcations of nonlinear equations in Banach spaces are investigated using singularity theory. An augmented system is constructed, which is assumed to have a cusp point. By projecting the equations onto a one- dimensional space small solutions of the original system are constructed. The method is applied to three bifurcation problems, in particular to Bernard's problem.
