A necessary and sufficient condition is given for the existence of additive conserved quantities for one-dimensional discrete-time lattice dynamical systems. The authors expect the method to be capable of extension to any translation-invariant lattice with any range of interaction. The condition is used to find additive conserved quantities for cellular automata, and three open problems are stated.
