The authors define certain distance functions in an \(n\)-D grid. There the distances of neighbour points may be unequal to unity. They derive a characterisation of such distance functions to define a metric. These distances then are called \(t\)-cost distances. Finally they study spheres in these grids and show, that known 2D and 3D distance measures in digital geometry are special cases of \(t\)-cost distances.
