An estimate for the local degree of approximation of functions \(f\in C^ 1[0,1]\) by Bernstein polynomials which is due to \textit{O. Shisha} and \textit{C. W. Groetsch} [ibid. 14, 317-318 (1975; Zbl 0305.41008)] is extended to positive linear approximation methods on the space \(C[0,1]\) satisfying certain conditions on the subspaces \(C^ 1[0,1]\) and \(C^ 2[0,1]\). An application is given for the Sikkema-Bernstein polynomials.
