The author presents some new aspects of the theory of representations of infinite discrete groups by giving some general criteria of the irreducibility and mutual equivalence for a family of induced representations. The results are applied to the infinite symmetric group \({\mathcal S}_ \infty\) in order to get a large family of completely new irreducible unitary representations.
