Let \(f: X\to M\) be a nondegenerate simplicial map from a (not necessarily locally finite) simplicial complex \(X\) of dimension \(\leq 3\) to a triangulated 3-manifold \(M\). The main purpose of the paper is to investigate an equivalence relation \(\Psi(f)\subset X\times X\) on \(X\) which is the smallest possible such relation compatible with \(f\) and killing all the singularities of \(f\). This equivalence relation is extensively used in several other papers of this author [in particular in that one reviewed below (see Zbl 0738.57009)].
