The author has shown that the Landau-Stuart type amplitude equation of the weakly nonlinear theory yields results inconsistent with the experimental observations for the cases as the transition in boundary layers and plane Poiseuille flow. He has discussed necessary modifiction needed for the amplitude equation. A new type of equation of the weakly nonlinear theory of hydrodynamic stability has been proposed.
