The quantized enveloping algebras \(U_ h({\mathfrak gl}_ \infty)\) and \(U_ h({\mathfrak g}(A_ \infty))\) are introduced. The highest weight representation theory is discussed; in particular, the ``basic representation'' is realised deforming the well-known vertex operator construction. Moreover, the \(R\)-matrix is constructed.
